Despite Recall, DePuy Hip Systems Clear Large Profit
One of the most common personal injury lawsuits filed in 2010 was related to the DePuy Orthopaedics recall. DePuy, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson, was forced to recall its ASR hip replacement systems based on a fail rate of 13%. Failure of the devices results in metal debris in the hip joints, causing severe pain and unknown but potentially hazardous long term affects. A DePuy hip recall lawsuit focuses on evidence that the company knew that the devices were faulty years before issuing a product warning or recall. With settlements reaching close to $84.7 million, the consequences are serious for the medical company, but it is likely that DePuy will still clear a large profit from the ASR systems.
